Lindy Hop was made famous by a group of young kids named Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers from New York, in the late 1930’s. Whitey’s dancers were regulars at the magical Savoy Ballroom, where black, white, rich and poor, packed out the house to watch Whitey’s dancers flip, & fly their way all over the Ballroom to the sounds of Big Band Swing!
Today, Lindy Hop has had a huge resurgence in popularity due to shows such as Dancing with the Stars. Everyone is falling in love with the fun of dance, the variety in style that swing provides including powerful, athletic and acrobatic, through to cheeky, and also smooth romantic swing styles as well.
Upon walking into a swing dance class you’re struck by the music, the energy and the FUN total strangers are having together whilst learning to dance for the first time. The music is exhilarating, bringing on the laughter and breaking the ice for new friendships. Classes are held weekday evenings throughout Sydney and Melbourne with Swing Patrol and there is no signing up; they specialise in beginners, so you can drop into a class anytime.
The leader in the Australian Swing Community, Swing Patrol has been happily sharing the love of Lindy Hop, Broadway Jazz, Charleston, Tap and Balboa with happy dancers young and old all over Melbourne and Sydney for 9 years.
They also hold the Melbourne Swing Festival, the Australian Jitterbug Championships and the Sydney Swing Festival, if you ever intend to get serious.
